CREATING SERENDIPITY. BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE FACTORY

23 Apr 2021

The story of Serendipity Organics is the story of a deep love for an exceptionally soft quality fabric: our signature organic cotton.

Developing a signature fabric like we have - with our melange series in particular - takes time. We have worked exclusively with the same people at the same factory in India for 10 years - a solid working relationship that is maintained through hard work and daily communication.

The factory is GOTS, Fairtrade and SA8000 certified. This is key to our ongoing involvement, as the high quality and pureness of our garments are essential to us and to our customers.

Working with certified organic cotton is a long and time-consuming process, but one we feel is absolutely worth every minute. The certifications are only rewarded to companies that fulfill a long line of requirements - and we are proud to say that we are certified in all areas of our productions. We visit the factory in India two to three times a year. While we are there, we check on the production, review samples, fabrics and generally try to check in with the staff. These trips are essential for maintaining a good relationship and communication, and we value them very much. Below are some behind the scenes photos from the production of the Fall/Winter collection. There are many skilled people involved in every step of the production, and many hands at work in order to make each item!

At the factory, the staff work in production/stitching lines. Each step of the line is responsible for an area of sewing or stitching, and as soon as one step is completed, the item moves on to the next. When an item reaches the last stop, it is finished. Above, you can see that the sweat fabric, which will eventually be pants, has been overlocked and is ready to move on to the next step of the stitching process, where it will be sewn together by the crotch. The person working in the next step of the line may for instance be responsible for sewing pockets, putting in zippers, or adjusting a waist.

What is important to note about the factory we work with, is the safe and fair working conditions that all employees are offered. A work day is relatively short, and have three built-in breaks for lunch and coffee every day. No shoes are allowed at the factory, in order to maintain a clean environment. This also gives the place a very homey vibe.

The work force - primarily tailors - is made up of 50 % men and 50 % women.
